MAGNIFICENCE IN THE MOUNTAINS

The mountaineous Connemara region of County Galway is perhaps one of the most stunning in Ireland.  Those who see it for the first time can’t help but be blown away by it’s majesty. Many’s the visitor who has gone back time and again, this writer included, only to be overawed by the breathtaking beauty each and every time. Right in the heart of all this lies Delphi Lodge, a haven for food lovers and those seeking to get away from it all. Delphi is a cosy country house, surrounded by the mountains of the Delphi Estate.  House and estate are run by Michael Wade, a natural host who manages to convey a special ‘home from home’ atmosphere to all his guests. Rooms are as comfy as can be. The sitting room has sofas and big armchairs for sinking into by the fire, with a pre-dinner drink from the ‘honesty’ cabinet.  The ‘Honesty Box’ is a wonderful old Irish tradition which meant customers paid for goods by putting their money into the box of cash left for the purpose. It’s a delightful old custom, harking back to days when honesty was completely taken for granted. Great to see it reinstated at Delphi, where guests help themselves to drinks from the array in the cabinet, and are responsible for noting what they’ve had when it comes to the bill. After an aperitif or three, dinner is taken in the dining room, where all guests sit together round the big dining table. A very convivial affair and the menu usually highlights Delphi Estate mountain lamb or even wild salmon from the lakes outside. This month features a very special weekend package at Delphi. The ‘Farm to Fork, Shore to Table’ package includes overnight stay and dine for the weekend, and a boat trip along Killary Fjord (Ireland’s only fjord),  to meet some of Delphi’s local food suppliers. Connemara Lamb Farmer Tom Nee will talk about his life farming in these mountains and demonstrate his collies gathering sheep in the dramatic terrain which borders the Atlantic. Simon and Kate Kennedy of Killary Fjord Shellfish will be on hand to show mussel production and preparing clams and oysters for market. After lunch, a scenic walk along the Famine Road in this area gives a better understanding of the famine history of this region. Dinner is cooked by Delphi Head Chef Pascal Marinot, hosted by Michael, and guests will be joined by Alan Gilligan of Gilligan Meats in Rosscommon, who will talk on his traditional beef farm and full ‘grass to table’ service he provides to establishments like Delphi. A wonderful foodie weekend of two nights b&b with dinner both nights, plus the full Saturday fjord guided tour programme, at €295 per person sharing. What a great opportunity to see this house and learn about one of the most beautiful and historic regions of Ireland.
