Overview

Set amongst the dramatic backdrop of the mountains and hills of Connemara, Delphi Lodge is a wonderful country house haven that promises relaxation and a taste of authentic Irish food. Delphi Lodge is a 200-year-old property with a fascinating history. This country house was built in the 1830s by the Marquis of Sligo and was designed to be a hunting and fishing lodge. Delphi Lodge remained in the family for over 120 years. During its history, Delphi has welcomed Nobel Prize winners, British Royalty and many more figures from history. Today, Delphi Lodge is a country house that welcomes guests to experience the unparalleled beauty of this location in the warmth and comfort of this Lodge. Moreover, during its history, Delphi Lodge has become a destination fishing experience due to the quality fish stocks which include Atlantic salmon that can be found in the lake located on the grounds. This has been honed and developed over the years, providing guests with expert guidance and curated packages that include fishing experiences combined with a stay in the Lodge. All of which makes for a fabulous getaway in the West of Ireland.

Dining

Dining at Delphi Lodge is a pleasure and affords guests the opportunity to get a taste of the wonderful food and drink offering of the wider Connemara region and beyond.

The culinary team is headed up by Head Chef Shane Sheedy with Kevin Hyland as Sous Chef. The team has made it a priority to source locally and delight in showcasing fresh produce in a modern style that is complemented by traditional Irish ingredients.

Delphi Lodge caters to breakfast, lunch and dinner diners across the day with a delicious selection of dishes that changes with the days, giving visitors and residents a lovely and versatile range of options.

Visiting Delphi Lodge you’re given a fascinating insight into country house living from days passed. This is even seen in the dining offering, especially in the evening time. Multiple tables set in a dining space that we expect to see in most restaurants is not what you get here at Delphi Lodge, instead guests are treated to a special experience and invited to dine at the Lodge’s large antique dining table for a communal dinner with fellow residents and guests.

During our visit, we were delighted to make our way to the drawing room for a pre-dinner drink, here we mingled with fellow guests getting to know them and hearing their stories of how they came to be at Delphi, similar to back in the 19th century when invited guests to the Lodge would meet and engage with fellow residents. The practice wouldn’t be common anywhere anymore but it was a delightful experience to dine over conversation as you get to know other residents. We chatted with fellow Irish people along with US and British visitors. Some came for the fishing while others were looking for a relaxing retreat and to explore the rugged Connemara landscape.

Dinner itself set in the lovely dining room, was an absolute pleasure. We enjoyed a delicious 6-course meal that was a mixture of lighter and more substantial courses. Highlights included a refreshing chilled Broccoli & Almond soup along with Pan Fried Fillet & Braised Cheek served with Spring Onions, Pomme Dauphine and Red Wine Jus. Flavours and ingredients were so wonderfully complemented that we enjoyed every bite.

Dinner rounded off with something sweet in the form of Poached Pears and dark chocolate along with the most amazing and delicate Petit Fours served with a steaming cup of tea. Great food and conversation, ensured a wonderful evening spent dining at Delphi Lodge.

Across the entire food offering at Delphi Lodge, you’ll get to experience the local ingredients of the region. Delphi proudly displays their local suppliers. These include fellow member Achill Island Sea Salt along with local Cheesemakers, Oysters and mussel producers and much more. Delphi Lodge also sources organic produce where possible.

You’ll get a great taste of an authentic local food scene when paying a visit to Delphi Lodge.

Rooms & Facilities

Delphi Lodge is truly a destination location offering guests a break from the rush of day-to-day life. Guests are invited to enjoy the many outdoor pursuits found on their doorstep. These include the dedicated fishery school along with nearby walking trails and hikes. While a one-night offering is available at certain times of the year, the team at Delphi Lodge always recommends visiting for a two-three night and even week-long stay so that you get the full Lodge experience.

From the moment we pulled up to the Lodge, we were given only the best country house warm welcome from staff members at the door. Upon check-in we were escorted to our room and then given a tour of the property. 13 in number, bedrooms are well in keeping with the timeless elegance of a Georgian house.

You’ll find them spacious and designed with comfort in mind. Rooms range from Classic to Premier Lakeside Views and also a Family Suite is available. You’ll also notice that, refreshingly there are no televisions in the rooms. With breathtaking lakeside views and the Connemara Hills encompassing you, this is all the entertainment you’ll need during your stay.

After waking from a restful sleep, you’ve got a delicious breakfast awaiting you. Graze a tasty selection of fresh fruit, yogurts and cereals before sampling a delicious menu of hot food options that are cooked fresh to order. We can’t think of a better way to start the day.
