Overview

The Oarsman as a business is owned and operated by brothers Conor and Ronan Maher, making this a delicious family run Irish restaurant. This business exudes the generational aspect of Irish hospitality within the family. These sons are a chip off the old block as their parents are legendary hoteliers and the depth of welcoming hospitality is tangible here. This popular restaurant is located on Bridge Street, only a literal stone’s throw from the water’s edge of the River Shannon in the bustling market town of Carrick-On-Shannon.

Dining

Stepping inside The Oarsman brings you into a restaurant that will not disappoint in atmosphere and surroundings. There’s a strong sense of style and elegance here. Furthermore, this is somewhere to relax and unwind in a classic Irish family run business where staff are not detached but are a core element of the experience.

The interior of The Oarsman features button back leather couches, an open fireplace, natural stone walls and an antique bar all above the earthy wooden floors and all this is topped off with live music from a gentle acoustic guitar. On the evening we visited The Oarsman, we enjoyed the talent of local entertainer John Crowe from Drumlish. The whole atmosphere was mellow and inviting.

At The Oarsman, the menu is crafted around fabulous locally sourced produce and it makes a bold statement about the calibre of Irish producers local to Carrick-On-Shannon.

The Oarsman also boast an impressive kitchen garden located at their homestead, which is in demand during the Irish growing season and is a wonderful addition for self-sufficiency on soft herbs, salads and edible flowers.

Our dining experience was exceptional as we were presented with fresh Irish cod that was simply pan-fried and garnished with homemade smoked black pudding crumb from Irish craft butcher Hugh Maguire. The fish was literally jumping fresh and elevated with a tasty tarragon sauce.

We were convinced and encouraged by the manager Jacinta to try the house special Pear and Almond individual tart served warm homemade custard, along a quenelle of lemon and thyme Ice-cream. A masterpiece both in taste and presentation.

If you are

more a cheese person, then you will be delighted to know that Jacinta listed off the province of the Irish cheeses without blinking an eye. It’s clear that this wasn’t just for our benefit but part of the fabric of every customer experience.
