The Flannery family have been in the business of fish for decades. Dad, Michael, has been a fisherman since 1975 and now his sons Micheál and Patrick have established their own seafood business, the cool and funky The Fish Box, which has been a big hit in a town renowned for quality dining.

Patrick is the skipper of the family trawler Cú Na Mara, which operates out of Dingle and brings fresh fish to the door of The Fish Box on a weekly basis. The catch inspires the fresh and changing menu at the restaurant.

Dad is involved in preparing and cooking the fish and Mum, Deirdre is the Head Chef while Micheál (junior) and his sister Eimear keep the business running in ship shape.

The busy restaurant offers takeout as well as dine-in service, and you’ll often see queues outside the door, but don’t worry, the line usually moves quickly. Lots of people take their seafood selection and have an alfresco feast by the sea.

The restaurant is light and bright and airy with a subtle nautical theme with blue and white decor, fisherman pendant lights, wooden tables and floor.

The menu is extensive and impressive and fills a large chalkboard. From creamy chowder to satisfying sandwiches, daily specials to fishy takes on classics, you really are spoiled for choice. However, their signature Fish Box is truly a great way to taste the Dingle Penninsula. A seafood lovers selection box, it contains a portion of the deep-fried fish on the menu, monkfish, scampi and fish of the day served with good old-fashioned proper chips cut from maharees potatoes.

With its seaside location, sustainable ethos and practices and fresh, flavourful food, The Fish Box is a seafood experience not to be missed in Dingle.


Sustainability

The Fish Box is a local, family business. Patrick, the brother of the owners, is the skipper of Cú Na Mara and brings in the fresh seafood. The boat operates on a minimum number of days at sea to conserve fuel. Being able to catch and serve their own seafood in this sustainable manner is a huge advantage of the restaurant. This also assures traceability of produce.

The family are committed to the BIM scheme ‘Fishing for Litter’, any sea litter collected in the nets is brought back to shore for waste management in order to play an active part in cleaning the local sea environment.

Back at the restaurant, all packaging in use is 100 per cent compostable.
