Good Food Ireland approved member, Sean F. Kelly, of Kelly’s Butchers of Newport has been named Mayo Person of the Year 2017, by the Mayo Association Dublin. Sean will receive the Virginia Gallagher Award at a gala ceremony in the Ballsbridge Hotel, Dublin on the 10th of February.

The award bestowed annually, is presented to someone that has made an exceptional contribution to both Mayo and its people. Seán Kelly joins an exclusive group of people including former President of Ireland and UN High Commisioner for Human Rights, Mary Robinson and also current Taoiseach Enda Kenny, who have all had a most notable impact on their home county.

We couldn’t have been happier here in Good Food Ireland to receive this joyous news. Seán, a founding member of Good Food Ireland, has tirelessly given his time and charisma to promoting Irish food both here and abroad.

Along with other founding members, Seán has welcomed the opportunity to stand together as a band of like-minded people under the pioneering movement of Good Food Ireland, highlight Irish food tourism on the world stage. From these small beginnings a connceted family has grown.

Along with playing a major role in an All Ireland food scene, Seán has proudly championed his home county of Mayo as a desired food destination in Ireland. Seán along with his brother, Seamus entered the family business started by their father more 75 years ago.

They have their own abbatoir, in which once a week Kelly’s Butchers process lamb and beef sold exclusively in the shop. 70% of meat sold comes from the Kelly’s own farm with the remainder picked by Seán from local markets and farms.

Seán Kelly was visibly emotional and surprised at his most recent achievement stating, “I am truly overwhelmed to be chosen as the Mayo Person of the Year for 2017. I had no idea a submission had even been sent in – it was a complete shock to me when I got the phone call telling me about the award. So many emotions rushed in all together – I was shocked, surprised, delighted, proud and most of all truly honoured to be chosen.”

The adjudicators for the award were impressed with the dedication Seán had to his home county stating. “Seán has been described as the man who put black pudding on the map. That is true – but more than that, he has put Mayo on the map in many ways and in many countries. Newport and Mayo are in Seán’s blood and everything he has done in the business had his hometown and county at their centre. All expansions and development have been in Newport, and this is where his heart lies.”

We would like to wish Seán Kelly the heartiest of congratulations on this much deserved award.
