CAFE CULTURE

What does it take to become the Good Food Ireland Cafe of the Year 2013-2014? Our brand new award winner, Siobhan O’Callaghan of Kalbos, has got the formula exactly right. Firstly, a relaxed atmosphere abounds in this little cafe in the lively West Cork town of Skibbereen. Locals and visitors blend happily together over a plate of something nice. Staff are welcoming and knowledgeable and proud of their food heritage. Next, the blackboard menu is a proud display of local suppliers – West Cork beef from the butcher in Skibbereen, fresh fish from nearby boats at Union Hall, cheeses and charcuterie from West Cork, home grown salads and vegetables from Sioobhan’s husband Anthony’s smallholding, Thornhill Organics. Plus pork from his own herd of rare breed free range pigs. After that, add some creativity in the kitchen  – courtesy of the talented cook Siobhan is – and a great value pricing strucutre – which always includes a €5.00 daily special at lunchtime. The bonus point goes to the delicious pastry display cabinet – all made daily in house. We all love something sweet now and again! We think you’ll agree Kalbos has all the right things in all the right places, fully deserving of  the accolade of Cafe of the Year. Call in and see for yourself!
