Overview

The Walled Garden, Helen’s Bay is a beautifully restored one-and-a-half-acre Victorian garden that dates to 1886.

Today, it celebrates a rich tradition of horticulture and heritage, offering authentic food, garden and creative experiences that showcase local, seasonal, and home-grown produce.

As custodians of this ‘secret’ garden, Lorraine and James Small have long been committed to sharing its rich culture, heritage, and unique charm with the local and wider communities.

Originally built by linen merchant Thomas Workman to supply his estate with fresh produce, the garden has been brought back to life after decades of neglect. Today, it stands as a heritage-led, eco-destination, that celebrates regeneration, sustainability and the beauty of the natural world.

Every corner of The Walled Garden reflects care and respect for its history. The team’s mission is to preserve its character while nurturing a living landscape that celebrates biodiversity and organic growing. Their ethos centres around sustainability, with regenerative practices and a deep connection to the land shaping everything they do. The garden produces organic vegetables, fruit and edible flowers that inspire their food and drink experiences bringing a true taste of the garden to every plate

They have also established thriving colonies of native Irish Black Bees as part of the Ards Peninsula Irish Black Bee Conservation Area. These vital pollinators play an essential role in the health and productivity of the garden, ensuring the continued abundance of flowers, fruits, and herbs. The bees produce limited batches of exquisite Walled Garden honey, available to purchase on site alongside homemade jams, marmalades, chutneys, and their award-winning traditional fudges.

Visitors can immerse themselves in a variety of experiences, from creative craft and nature workshops to private tours and unique seasonal events. Activities such as Autumn and Christmas wreath making, willow weaving, and other creative experiences invite guests to reconnect with nature and traditional skills. Each experience reflects the garden’s sense of place, celebrating heritage, craftsmanship, creativity, and community.

Food at The Walled Garden is rooted in the same values that define the space itself – authenticity, sustainability, and a deep connection to the land. Food experiences are woven throughout the garden’s programme through special events, seasonal dinners, and collaborations with local chefs, celebrating the very best of each season and its produce. Visitors are connected to the source of their food, enjoying dishes crafted with local, seasonal ingredients from the garden and from other local producers.

The homemade food served during the various events is carefully crafted and beautifully presented, with a focus on flavour, tradition, and simplicity. Dishes often feature produce grown in the garden and are designed to reflect the season, ensuring that each meal is a unique celebration of the time of year and the ingredients available.

The food at The Walled Garden isn’t about fine dining or formality; it’s about connection – to nature, to community, and to the love of sharing ingredients grown and prepared with care. Whether through a seasonal workshop, a themed dining event, or a private celebration, the garden’s food experiences are genuine, unpretentious, and deeply in tune with their surroundings.
