Overview

Killeavy Castle Estate is a stylish 4 Star hotel located in the village of Killeavy in the beautiful orchard county of Armagh, easily accessible being ten minutes from Newry City and the Belfast to Dublin motorway. The journey time from both Dublin and Belfast to Killeavy Castle Estate is one hour. The hotel is the centrepiece of a 350-acre estate including the stunning Slieve Gullion mountain, extensive woodlands, and a mixed farm with longhorn cattle, sheep, a kitchen vegetable garden and a walled garden providing a fresh harvest of mixed fruit and herbs to meet the chef’s day to day requirements. The current owners, the Boyle family, purchased Killeavy Castle Estate in 2013 and lovingly restored the castle to its former glory. The architects and Mick Boyle have been very meticulous in the restoration of the Castle and the old coach house which now presents as the welcoming entrance to the newly constructed hotel. The blend of old and new has created a unique and luxurious customer experience.

Dining

The values and ethos implemented by Killeavy Castle Estate are prioritised around quality and sustainability and are reflected in the chef’s creations on the menus in the 4 different dining locations available on-site at Killeavy Castle Estate.

The culinary team at Killeavy Castle Estate use the freshest available local and Irish ingredients sourced from the onsite working farm, the Walled Garden and carefully selected local suppliers. Similar to the Castle and the Coach House, the Walled Garden is a fully restored and protected structure. The working farm and the substantial Walled Garden provide a unique resource for the hotel’s fresh food requirements. The menus are flexible and will change frequently depending on what is coming into season and is available.

The cattle and sheep reared on the year-round outdoor rich pasture are processed locally and returned to Killeavy Castle Estate where the team dry age the produce and then break it down for their requirements. In addition to supplying the fresh food requirements to the hotel kitchen, additional fresh produce available is sold in the onsite farm shop which is located in the Walled Garden Café.

Killeavy Castle Estate has a full and part-time crew working on the farm.

Food is served in both indoor and outdoor settings depending on the time of year and the prevailing weather.

Named for the location in which Killeavy Castle is located, Gullion at Killeavy can be found on a split level within the hotel and enjoys commanding views through the picture windows across the Estate farm and the attractive Armagh countryside. The atmosphere is comfortable and luxurious. The restaurant is dressed in crisp white linen tablecloths and serviettes. On show in the restaurant is a giveaway sign of the local provenance available at Killeavy Castle Estate. Chefs work in the preparation of large jars of prepared vegetables, etc., at various stages of pickling and fermenting for inclusion in the various dishes that are on display.

The restaurant is open for breakfast service seven days per week. Breakfast at Killeavy Castle Estate is a culinary experience, in addition to the usual selection of cereals, fresh juices and fresh-baked bread there is a choice of freshly made smoothy shots and yoghurt and fruit coulis pots.

The hot breakfast is a showcase buffet selection including all the items you would expect, the standout for us was the oddly named ‘Veggie Roll’. The name is misleading, this is an Ulster breakfast speciality of a sausage made from minced beef, fresh herbs and diced onion. This is made from the Estate reared longhorn cattle.

Dinner at Killeavy Castle Estate is an experience. The menu offered for dinner in the restaurant is based on a seven or four-course Tasting menu. This gives the chef and the kitchen team the flexibility to showcase the freshest available Estate produced and locally sourced ingredients. Dinner service runs from 6 pm – 9 pm Thursday to Monday inclusive, and lunch on Sundays from Noon – 3 pm.

Sunday lunch at Killeavy Castle Estate is a very popular and enjoyable experience. Chef offers a 3-course menu plus coffee with a choice of starters, main course and dessert. Diners can expect to see fresh Estate reared and grown produce peppered on the choice of dishes available.

Rooms & Facilities

Killeavy Castle Estate offers a choice of luxury accommodation to suit all requirements in a magical setting. When visitors arrive at the hotel to check in, don’t be surprised to find a big friendly giant looking for a hug in Paddy, the resident Irish Wolfhound.

The reception building is a fully restored and protected 19th-century coach house structure which was originally designed to receive the arriving horse-drawn, coaches. Notice how the designers have reflected this in the wide entrance way and the separation of the working reception desk and back offices have been styled like the original stables.
