Overview

Tucked into the charming heart of Comber’s Georgian-style Square, No 14 Georgian House marries historic elegance with modern Irish dining. Housed in a beautifully restored building – parts dating back to 1722 with mid-18th-century additions and a lovingly renovated walled garden – it’s a fitting stage for chef Jim (James) Mulholland’s celebrated contemporary cuisine.

Dining

No 14 Georgian House is a place where dining becomes a celebration of flavour, heritage and seasonality. From the first bite, the kitchen’s dedication to local provenance is clear – each dish is thoughtfully created using the finest produce from trusted Northern Irish suppliers.

Perhaps you begin your evening with delicate small plates – crispy mussel popcorn, hand-crafted tartlets or charred sourdough with whipped butter – each one a promise of the creativity to come. The aromas drifting from the open kitchen hint at the richness of what follows, whether it’s slow-braised meats, line-caught fish or vibrant vegetarian creations.

As the evening unfolds, the menu opens up to showcase the best of land and sea. Prime Lisdergan beef sizzles from the grill, paired with robust sauces and seasonal sides, while seafood dishes like halibut with seaweed-vinegar gel highlight the kitchen’s skill in balancing tradition with innovation. For those who prefer a plant-based feast, imaginative plates such as chickpea tagine or tofu katsu curry ensure that every guest feels indulged.

Weekends bring their own sense of occasion. A leisurely Sunday board offers hearty roasts with all the trimmings – crispy potatoes, seasonal vegetables and rich gravy – served in surroundings that blend Georgian elegance with modern comfort. It’s the kind of meal best shared with family and friends, where conversation lingers as long as the flavours.

Dining at No 14 Georgian House is more than a meal – it’s an experience shaped by passion, place and people. Here, every visit tells a story of Ireland’s culinary heritage, reimagined with creativity and warmth.

The “House Produced” food is where No 14 truly excels, and our meal highlighted this with precision and flair. We began with Sea Scallops accompanied by Vichyssoise and Raeburn Apple – a triumph of flavour and presentation. The scallops were delicately seared, their sweetness lifted by the apple’s sharpness and brought together by the silky smoothness of the vichyssoise.

The Moile Beef Tartare followed, a dish that balanced boldness with refinement. Cornichons, pickled cucumber and marrow toast added texture and bite, while the cured duck egg brought a luxurious richness. It was expertly flavoured, every element working in harmony.

For mains, the Darne of Halibut was outstanding. Served with Ham Fat Carrot, Orange Rouille and a Buttermilk Fried Oyster, it was a masterclass in complementary flavours – the fish perfectly cooked, the carrot and rouille adding both sweetness and depth, and the oyster lending a satisfying crunch and briny finish.

Dessert proved a fitting finale. The Salted Caramel Tart with baked peach and plum, homemade ice cream and leaf tuille offered indulgence with balance. The caramel was rich yet never overpowering, lifted by the fruit’s natural sharpness and the refreshing coolness of the ice cream.

The restaurant’s commitment to local and Irish produce is impeccable. Each menu proudly lists the origins of the ingredients, and the chef’s personal explanation during service further enhances the sense of connection to place. The drinks offering is equally well considered – local beers and ciders sit alongside a carefully curated wine list, ensuring options for every palate.

From relaxed daytime café offerings, such as freshly baked treats and delicious lunches, to the expansive evening and breakfast menus, No 14 Georgian House delivers quality and creativity at every turn. Chef Mulholland’s positive energy and clear pride in his work shine through in every detail, reinforcing the sense that this is not just a meal but an experience where care, craft and passion combine.

Sustainability

No 14 Georgian House takes sustainability seriously – so much so that it was recognised with a “2024 Best Sustainable Practices Restaurant” award, reflecting its ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility and excellence.

This commitment is more than a badge – it’s embedded in the restaurant’s culture. Menus clearly list the provenance of each ingredient, drawing attention to locally sourced and Irish produce in every dish. The transparency of ingredient origins, combined with Chef Mulholland’s own explanations during service, reinforces a meaningful connection to local suppliers and seasons.
