Sustainability

The Blue Goat Ramelton: A Cheese Lover’s Paradise with a Sustainable Twist

Des and Co are not only passionate about the produce they sell, but where it all comes from. Des is a huge supporter of the Irish Raw Milk Cheese producers here in Ireland, having worked the markets alongside them in Dublin.

Raw milk cheese, like the ones showcased at The Blue Goat, are produced by small-scale farmers who prioritise sustainable practices. These farmers often rely on traditional methods and natural grazing systems, which have a lower environmental impact than intensive industrial farming. By supporting these local producers, you’re contributing to a more sustainable food system.

The use of goats and sheep in cheesemaking also plays a role in sustainable agriculture. They are well-suited to grazing on marginal land and can help maintain biodiversity. They can also produce high-quality milk that is used to make a variety of delicious cheeses. Visit Rathmul

They have a very close working relationship with Rathmullan House, who supply them with delicious to-go food and apple pies made with their homegrown produce. At the end of the summer, they even share their grapes with Des for his special cheese boxes.

From sheep and goats to tiny cows, the farmers behind ‘Donegal Dexter’ approached Des to test the market for their beautiful native grass fed beef and the fridge has been fully stocked ever since. Not only is he supporting the local Dexter farmers in the county, Des has created awareness about this tasty native sustainable beef.

So, the next time you visit The Blue Goat Ramelton, you’ll not only be indulging in a delicious experience but also supporting sustainable food producers and practices.
