Overview
Step back in time and wander the grounds of Brook Hall Estate & Gardens, steeped in history that stretches back centuries. The estate’s story begins in the 17th century, with the establishment of Brook Hall itself. Evidence suggests the walled garden, a key feature of the estate today, may even predate the house, potentially serving as a vital source of food during the infamous Siege of Derry in 1689. Fast forward to the 18th century, and the current Brook Hall is constructed, its elegant architecture becoming a landmark on the banks of the River Foyle.
Ownership of Brook Hall passed through generations, witnessing a multitude of historical events. The estate played a silent untold role during the Great Famine, the Irish emigration in the 19th century, and both World Wars.
Today, Brook Hall Estate & Gardens remains in the Gilliland family’s care, now in its sixth generation. The family has transformed the estate into a haven for visitors, where meticulously maintained gardens flourish alongside the rich historical tapestry of the property. However, their vision extends beyond simple preservation. The Gilliland family is a leader in sustainable estate management, striving to become the first carbon-positive farm in Northern Ireland. Through innovative practices and a commitment to environmental responsibility, Brook Hall Estate & Gardens offers a glimpse into the past while setting a new standard for the future.
