THE ART OF THE TART

As the summer moves swiftly on, one place worth a visit in the remaining weeks is Ardmore in Co. Waterford. This traditional seaside village ticks all the right boxes for a family holiday or day out. The safe beach has miles of sand, for walking, sandcastle building and soaking up whatever remains of summer sun. When you’ve done all that, a visit to Whitehorses Restaurant in Ardmore village is also on the agenda. The Flavin sisters have been here well over  a decade, serving a menu of good homecooking to visitors and regulars. Whitehorses is set in what was once a village shop, also run by sisters, coincidentally. The modern dining space set in traditional surroundings,  is now joined by an extensive enclosed garden eating area,  and a special Garden Room which provides space for drinks for those wating on tables. Candles and a working stove add cosiness in the evenings. One of the best things about this restaurant is the very tempting dessert cabinet, where all manner of good things are on display. A slice of this, or a piece of that,  is very much the question. On a recent visit, we found these pretty tartlets with Wexford Strawberries. Just one of the many puddings made daily in house, which diners are invited to browse and choose. Difficult decisions! Whitehorses is open weekdays 11am to 11pm till September, then at weekends in autumn and winter.
