Overview

Set in the heart of Ireland’s countryside at the foot of the Slieve Bloom Mountains, Ballyfin Demesne reveals itself with breathtaking drama. As you travel down the sweeping driveway and round a gentle bend, the landscape opens wide to unveil a magnificent Georgian house overlooking a vast, shimmering lake.

On arrival, the welcome is as memorable as the setting. House staff greet you on the steps, seamlessly taking care of your luggage before escorting you inside, where a chilled glass of champagne awaits, an elegant introduction to the experience that follows.

Spread across 614 acres of formal gardens, ancient woodlands and tranquil lakes, this meticulously restored 19th-century estate offers an immersive escape from the everyday. With 21 individually designed rooms, Ballyfin’s intimate scale creates a rare sense of privacy and refined exclusivity.

The estate’s story is woven through centuries. It was shaped by the Coote family, whose vision established Ballyfin as one of Ireland’s most impressive country houses. In the 20th century, the property entered a new chapter under the stewardship of the Patrician Brothers, who operated it as a school. At the start of the millennium, the current owners acquired the estate and undertook an extraordinary restoration, returning the house to its former grandeur while sensitively preserving its layered history.

Every element of the Ballyfin experience, from exceptional cuisine to curated countryside pursuits, including a carriage ride with Lionel and his two Irish Draught mares, reflects both the storied heritage of the estate and the authentic spirit of Irish hospitality.

Above all, it is the people who bring Ballyfin to life. The team’s warmth, professionalism, and evident pride ensure that every guest feels personally welcomed and genuinely cared for, each playing a role in sharing the remarkable story of this estate.

Ballyfin Demesne is approved to the Good Food Ireland® Collection in recognition of its commitment to authentic Irish hospitality, sustainability and provenance. From the estate’s Walled Garden and locally sourced ingredients to carefully curated wines and seasonal menus, every element reflects Ireland’s culinary heritage. Exceptional attention to detail, environmentally responsible practices and a dedication to quality ensure that guests enjoy a dining and hospitality experience that is both luxurious and deeply rooted in the very best of Ireland.

The Walled Garden

At the heart of the estate lies the eight-acre walled gardens, supplying the chefs with the finest seasonal fruits, vegetables and herbs, as well as an array of flowers for the house. The seasonal produce, harvested daily, is central to Ballyfin’s culinary offering, transformed into dishes that celebrate freshness, flavour and a strong sense of place. Under the expert guidance of Kayleigh Keenan, Estate Manager and in close collaboration with Executive Head Chef Richard Picard-Edwards, this garden-to-plate philosophy is executed with exceptional care, creativity and precision.
