Overview

The Glyde Inn is located in the coastal village of Annagassan in Co Louth. This quiet seaside village lies where the River Glyde meets the sea. It’s a three-generational O’Neill family business, currently operated by Paul and Ann O’Neill and their son Conor. The Glyde Inn enjoys a rich reputation for warm welcoming hospitality and good local food. The secret sauce behind the food is the locally sourced fresh seafood and the inspired decision by Ann O’Neill to take a cookery course with Darina Allan at Ballymaloe Cookery School about 32 years ago. On returning to The Glyde Inn, Ann launched Read More

Dining

The Glyde Inn commands unrivalled views across Dundalk Bay. It’s a hidden Gem location with the benefit of a front-line outdoor dining terrace off the restaurant.

The spectacular views are matched with amazing food. The centerpiece of the food offering is the locally sourced fresh seafood landed on a daily basis at Annagassan Harbor from the Grade A waters of Dundalk Bay.

Diners also have the option of eating in the Bar area, where you’ll enjoy a cosy open fire along with being amongst a traditional bar setting.

There is a tradition of fresh food at The Glyde Inn. The principle of freshly made in-house and using the provenance of locally sourced fresh ingredients was established by Ann O’Neill who honed her cooking skills at Ballymaloe Cookery School with Darina Allen.

When we got a show around of the kitchen facilities, son Conor commented that his Mum Ann still kept her hand involved. Coming out of the oven were 2 trays of freshly made meringue for the homemade Pavlova that Ann had made that morning.

During our visit, Chef prepared a dish using the little-known delicacy of Razor Clams. This delicate shellfish was lightly pan-fried in garlic and herb oil and served back in its shell with lemon butter.

The tidal bay of Dundalk Bay waters produces the largest Razor Clams, the bulk of which are exported to Paris and the far East but not before the daily requirements are hand-picked by the local boatmen for The Glyde Inn diners.

In addition to our starter following our Viking experience, Chef presented a mini seafood showcase on the restaurant’s long-boat table. This included Peal and Eat Clogherhead Prawns and Crack and Eat Annagassan Crab Claws presented in garlic herb butter and dipping sourdough toast. Irish food at its best!

Additional Facilities

The Glyde Inn is keen to grow its reputation as a destination dining and tourism location, with this in mind they have developed an exciting VR experience based on the area’s strong Viking connections.

Annagassan was the ancient site of the first Viking settlement in Ireland and Europe’s largest important European Viking settlement. It was chosen by the Vikings because of the water access and the abundance of fresh seafood in particular the Razor Clam delicacy.

On this historical legacy, Conor O’Neill has developed an innovative and ‘virtual reality’ Viking tour experience at The Glyde Inn. On this tour visitors can expect to relive the invasion and the development of Europe’s biggest Viking settlement through the eyes of ‘Bjorn the Bear’.

The experience starts with an introduction by the tour master at The Glyde Inn while sitting at the specially commissioned Viking long boat table. Guests are then provided with a personal set of virtual reality goggles and earphones. Following the 10-minute reality tour, visitors then remove their goggles to reveal a feast of local seafood presented at the center of the long boat table, this includes Razor Clams, Crab Claws, Peal and Eat Prawns, and local Oysters. This feast is paired with a locally brewed Irish Craft Pale Ale.

Sustainability

To assist with energy consumption at the Glyde Inn, low-energy light fittings are in place in the front and back of the house.

Moreover, they are fully focused on waste reduction along with having a full waste recycling stream in place.

Local sourcing is a priority with much of their seafood being sourced from the shores and sea in view of the eatery.

The Glyde Inn has also been reducing plastic usage with the aim to eliminate it with the assistance of its suppliers.
