Overview

Orchards full of delicious apples can be found at the Trass’ Apple Farm in Co. Tipperary. These orchards produce juicy, crisp apples that in turn give their bright, fresh flavours to the handmade and pressed apple juice that Cornelius Trass produces here on the farm. No less than twelve different sorts of apple are grown here, available to buy in various forms at the farm’s well-stocked farm shop on site.

Meet The Maker

The Traas family moved from The Netherlands to Ireland in the late 1960s to grow fruit. The Traas family had been growing fruit in Holland since the 1800s, but because it was difficult to find new land there for fruit-growing, they decided to make a move to Ireland. They looked at a number of farms and decided on the one where The Apple Farm is now situated, between Cahir and Clonmel on the main Limerick-Waterford road.

Because there was no structure to enable them to sell their fruit locally, they opened a shop at the farm in the early 1970s. It is this very same barn that they use to this day to sell most of what they produce from 40 acres of fruit.

Tipperary’s fertile pastures are ideal for apple orchards. At The Apple Farm in Cahir, owner Cornelius Traas knows that and has made the most of what nature provided. His orchards produce juicy, crisp apples that in turn give their bright, fresh flavours to the handmade and pressed apple juice that Cornelius produces here on the farm. No less than twelve different sorts of apple are grown here.

The early season starts with James Grieve and Katya, followed by Delba Estivale. As October kicks in, you’ll find unusual varieties like Alkmene and Cevaal alongside more familiar Cox’s Orange Pippins. Golden Delicious, Elstar and Jonagored also make an appearance later in the season, and all the while you can get the plump, knobbly Bramley’s Seedling, the famous cooking apple. Bramley’s have a sharp, citrus taste and juicy flesh which cooks to a soft puree, making them ideal for inclusion in a typical Irish apple tart encased in buttery pastry.

It’s not just apples grown here: four varieties of strawberries, three of raspberry, four of cherry, three types of plums, and two pears complement the range in the farm shop, again depending on when they ripen. Some of the strawberries are available as pick-your-own in the middle of summer.

In addition, a range of juices has been made on the farm since 1995. There is apple juice, mixtures including strawberry, raspberry, and blackcurrant juices, and some sensational sparkling juices. Fruits from the farm are also used to make jams, jelly and cider vinegar.

Sustainability

Did you know that apple orchards serve our environment in exactly the same way as trees? In fact, an acre of apples will extract about 15 tonnes of carbon dioxide from the air each year, and produce 6 tonnes of oxygen too. The Traas family are passionate about sustainability, using wind-generated electricity, farming with a strong commitment to the environment and supplying local stores to reduce food miles.
