TWO’S COMPANY

It’s always good to see the businesses in our network teaming up to support the Good Food Ireland ethos. On a recent visit to The Village Greengrocer and Food Hall  in Castlemartyr village, Co. Cork, we met Dorothy Walsh, who owns and runs this shop with husband Sean. The Walsh’s have been providing fresh Irish seasonal and traditional fruits and veg to the neighbourhood for many years. Since they started this business, it has expanded to include a host of useful store cupboard ingredients, homemade preserves, a salad and deli counter for takeaway sandwiches and wraps, and most recently, an upstairs dining room for sit down customers. There’s also garden tables outside by the river for enjoying a bite while the sun is out. There’s always a cold and hot special of the day – for takeaway or eating in – and when it’s gone it’s gone! A quick browse round the shelves here reveals quite a few products from Good Food Ireland producers, as well as a fantastic selection of fresh fruit and veg, clearly labelled with origins, so you know where whatever you are buying was grown. This time of year, the choice includes salad leaves, fresh summer berries, leeks, spinach, tomatoes, new potatoes, carrots and broccoli, among others, all from Ireland – and much from the local area. In the chill cabinet, we found Bluebell Falls Goat’s cheese, from Charleville in north Cork. Dorothy was keen to show us this lovely salad on the deli counter, Irish spinach with Bluebell Falls Goat’s cheese stirred through  – a tasty pairing of two fresh ingredients just right for this time of year. Quite delicious!
