Overview

Natural farming results in tender meat, as proved by Skeaghanore Duck. Skeaghanore ducks are fed only a natural corn-based diet with absolutely nothing added except time, care and attention. These natural farming methods employed by West Cork farmer Eugene Hickey produce plump tasty birds which are now found on menus nationwide, not to mention home tables up and down the land.

Meet The Maker

Eugene and Helena Hickey have been farming ducks and geese in West Cork since 1994. The Hickey family farm, which overlooks the Atlantic in Roaring Water Bay, was Eugene’s childhood home. Duck production began here when the West Cork artisan food revolution was just making its mark on the country. The couple began with a small flock of ducks, to test the market.

Before long, the natural farming methods employed by Eugene produced plump tasty birds, which were soon in demand from local butchers and chefs.

You can’t mention duck in Ireland without mentioning Skeaghanore Duck in the same sentence – it’s a flagship product of West Cork. Even Queen Elizabeth was presented with a ‘West Cork Duck’ on her official visit to Cork’s English Market in 2011.

This award-winning farm produces Pekin duck, and because they live so close to Roaring Water Bay, the salt air effects add to the texture of the duck giving a salt marsh flavour. Skeaghanore Duck has received a number of Blas na hEireann Irish Food Awards over the past few years.

Skeaghanore Ducks are fed only a natural corn-based diet, with no growth promoters, antibiotics or anything added apart from time and care. All of the processing is completed on the farm which allows everything that they produce to be fully traceable from farm to fork.

Skeaghanore Duck meat is tender, tasty and succulent and its skin roasts to crispy perfection. The farm supplies whole fresh duck, half duck, duck breasts, legs and wings to professional chefs and the retail market. Chefs also love the tender duck livers and duck fat, which makes the most divine roast potatoes!

Duck isn’t all they produce here: in the months running up to Christmas, the pasture around the farm near Ballydehob is dotted with cotton wool balls – that’s what it looks like from a distance – but actually, these are the Hickey’s free-range geese, which graze the fields rolling down to the sea.

Skeaghanore Goose has rich dark meat and delectably gamey flavour from the slow-growing process, natural feed, and plenty of fresh Atlantic Ocean air.

A selection of fresh chicken in varying cuts are also available to buy from Skeaghanore West Cork Farm and you can be assured their chicken is just as succulent and tasty as their other products.


Sustainability

Skeaghanore Duck is produced in a natural and sustainable free-range manner on the Hickey’s Ballydehob farm, hand-reared in small batches. Skeaghanore Ducks are fed only a natural corn-based diet, with no growth promoters, antibiotics or anything added apart from time and care. All of the processing is completed on the farm which allows everything that they produce to be fully traceable from farm to fork.
